This two-hour inservice teleconference will feature several presentations plus school- based video segments that focus on the teacher's first year: survival strategies for the beginning teacher and guidelines for those who serve as mentors for first-year teachers. Topics will include basic survival tips, the continuum between evaluation and mentoring of new or newly trained teachers, and finding a balance between affect (rapport-building) and effect (effectiveness) in one's teaching. Speakers include Mr. Steve Barkley of Performance Learning Systems and Dr. Brenda Stallion, an associate professor of Integrative Studies and Teacher Education at Western Kentucky University. Participants will be provided with a set of curriculum materials to accompany the telecast. They will also be invited to call in their questions live to telecast speakers, as well as post comments and survey responses online.

Topics will include attitude self-checking for teachers, keys to engaging students in learning for the long term, and using mentors to help bring appropriate closure for the teacher's first year. Speakers include Steve Barkley of Performance Learning Systems and Dr. David Welsh, a licensed psychologist and popular speaker on motivational issues. Participants will be provided with a set of curriculum materials to accompany the telecast.
